Imagine buying a hard drive 💾 💽 in store. What do you look for? Of course you look for read/write speeds 🏎️ of your new disk. So, Throughput for a Layer 2 provides a direct measure of a blockchain's ability to handle compute effectively.

Throughput also reveals how close a chain is to its operational limits. An example from Linea. They observed their highest measured throughput during Linea Park. Their gas target is 10 mgas/s.

Take the example of @base. Base raised their gas targets from 2.5 mgas/s to 3.75 and now at 5 mgas/s, which also had an effect on transaction cost. In this example, Base's median txcosts came down from 30cents to now ~3 cents (all post-EIP4844) 📉
