this is good advice. my dad grew up in an environment in which they never celebrated birthdays or christmas, or basically anything which "required" a present. I suspect this is one of the reasons why, in his elderly years, he is amazingly patient and forgiving - it's as if he is not expecting anything from anyone, though i am only hazarding a guess as to why patience is one of his virtues - perhaps it's due to something entirely different.
