There is high demand from Lens users to see Lens Protocol going permissionless. Avoiding protocol DDoS/spam, an idea from @lens/agrislis that I find intere

- I think it sounds interesting and I’m also one of this who doesn’t completely get the difference between handles and profiles.
Why not as a next step being much more generous with invites for active users?
And also for projects it could be really great to let them onboard all their community to lens. Eg with @lens/electricfilm we have been thinking of moving fully to lens for everything. Maybe apply for a lens grant to build a community hub on lens but as long as we cannot onboard everyone we are kind of stuck with discord as we don’t want to leave ppl behind.
- I think, I still don't understand the difference between a handle and a profile.
is a handle lens/carstenpoetter?
and a profile is cpoetter which is represented by an NFT?
all posts, comments, collects,... are associated with the profile NFT?
- This sounds like a fair idea as it would make the profiles less valuable which appears to be the intended purpose
- sounds interesting.
+ $pointless for tipping high quality content
- A bit like acquiring a self-custodial wallet and paying for an ENS, but less expensive altogether
- hmm just wonder what are the set of qualifications for a "non-qualified users" to be recognize as a "qualified users"
and should it be transparent, publicy so anyone can access it
- Hmm, well… you know….

- Free naked profiles will be equal to spam very fast. I'd be really cautious. For it to be worth it, there must be a good plan to manage it. On top of that, qualification for gasless usage must be extremely straightforward and clear. Otherwise, expect disappointment and churn to be quite high.
Allowing to buy handles can work. The most motivated people will be let in first. That will give additional time for apps to prepare for the masses. NFT speculation and squatting spree will start, but maybe it's ok.
Going fully open is out of MVP range. The mass tryout event that will happen is the best opportunity to multiply user base, by far. For it to succeed, those who come must stay. While crypto folk and airdrop farmers will go through many inconveniences, the broader masses will compare Lens apps to Twitter/X, and we are not ready for that.
In the ideal world, we need more stages to open up. But time is ticking and the community is dropping hints. Creators want bigger audiences and are getting tired, that's understandable.
Tough call.
- the more we are the better. ens has 800k ethereum users (2+mm names) paying $ 5-640/ year + mainnet fees for names and it's working. lens is a lot more. and it will do better
but you gotta open up, and do it while it's hot
- Can my profile be linked to another handle?
- Sounds cool 😎
Let's make it affordable for all
- Can't we build a zkproof mechanism to prove the identity so the bots can't take the advantage of onboarding process
- Good idea!
- 👀
- Count me in
- brilliant 👏
