originally meant to solve a big problem in a short time. now they're used as sandboxes for devs to try new dev tools :) i wrote about their history in a piece here: https://mirror.xyz/jacqvaca.eth/mJH4wXDRggcr9z2SmIBgyPPOFUBPMjsRJpBYrOs9AGo

to pay less to people or even just with pizza
At this point, I think the main thing about them is the opportunity for social connections. The actual results of most hackathons are not great, but you usually do them over a weekend in intense conditions and sometimes you meet people you never otherwise would have. 🤷♂️
Projects way of finding bugs and exploits in their system by letting hackers/users/programmers try and exploit the system for a prize
I want to join one next time there’s one. Been involved with ETHglobal to a certain level. You learn a lot, but if your project is FOCUSED then you can complete and potentially win $ for the winners. Although I think everyone gets some kind of surprise. So its a sprint type project and you try to finish it by a deadline. You can add people to your team, mentors and others.
