- Much love for giving my music life by you listening!
Released early Y2K, yes, 2000, I hope this CD today informs you more about my musical journey.
The record is so imperfect and perfect in so many ways...
Largely imperfect due to me having to tune the guitar a whole step on all strings so that I could use barre chords, limited by a cat bite in the **Proximal Interphalangeal Joint (PIP**) of left index finger where the infection consumed about 1/3 of the cartilage in that knuckle and has left (to this day) a lump of scar tissue facing the strings - thankfully I regained all of my strength to full tension since then...
Having the strings so loose (using light gauge at that), the November weather constantly knocked my guitar out of tune. Along with that, it was recorded without a click track and tempo is everywhere...
The perfection (ok, call it idealism) is that the guitar was recorded with two Neumann KM184s and stereo inputs from my effects rig - four channels with unique voicing - some worked, some not. The mixing console was a vintage Soundcraft Series 6000 48-Channel (16-Bus Mixing Console) that was imported from Ireland, used for some of U2s early recordings... the new owner was slowly cannibalizing the channel modules as they were breaking down... so about 40 channels were still operative... I know I was only using 4, but still a fun story...
The recording can truly be called solo instrumental guitar, as there was no overdubbing. The multi-layer effect (when noticeable) was just for the fact there were 4 separate tracks of the same source with varying EQ, reverb, modulation (chorus, pitch, flanger). I loved noodling the settings... a setup I use to this day... two mics and stereo direct from the piezo pickup.
Everything was mixed down to tape on a 4-track Otari reel-to-reel. The A/D conversion/mastering software used was Red Rooster.
It was a labor of love and a source of pride to finish the project. It's been loved by many and criticized by some... all I can do is let it exist for what it is, a marker or a traveler of that time and place. I can't change it.
I owe a lot to the engineer - Nathan DeMello - along with all music teachers, engineers and close friends in the music industry - helped me appreciate where I am today... I've gotten better and still have so much room to grow.
Much love to you - thank you for reading the account of this adventure I took... I hope you enjoy it! It's on the lens blockchain and will land on another, soon, with permanence.
Note - I'll leave the story about the release party, which coincided with a serious heatwave, for another time.
THANK YOU!
